SEVEN KILLINGS

Seven Killings (七杀) in Bazi: Why “I Walked a 七杀 Pillar” Explains Nothing

A man who spent forty years on good land and died a failed scholar

There is a line in 段建业’s 《命理珍宝》 that I keep coming back to, because it takes apart the single most common sentence people say about their own chart. A man spends his last forty years walking through luck pillars that are, by his own system, 用神旺地 — strong ground for the element his chart wants — and he still ends his life a 落魄文人, a failed scholar.

The note does not blame the luck pillars. It blames 禄. 禄主自我,自私,自己的 — 禄 is the self, and what belongs to the self — and 日主贪禄即只顾他自己,所以成不了大事: the day master clings to its own 禄, which reads as a man who only looks after himself, and that is why nothing came of him.

Then the sentence that matters for this page. 与七杀旺不旺关系不大 — it had little to do with how strong the 七杀 was.

That is a note refusing to let a label carry a verdict. It is also the move most people never make when they say: I am in a 七杀 luck pillar, that is why these ten years went badly.

What is 七杀 (Seven Killings) in Bazi?

七杀, Seven Killings, is one of the Ten Gods. It is the element that controls your Day Master and shares its yin-yang polarity: if you are 甲, yang wood, then 庚, yang metal, is your 七杀. The controlling element of the opposite polarity — 辛, for 甲 — is 正官, Direct Officer. Both are the thing that restrains you; the polarity decides whether that restraint reads as an office or as a threat.

The classical job description is broader than bad. 官杀星所代表的是职务、地位与权力,还代表官匪、官司、疾病、桃色事件 — the officer and killing gods carry office, rank and authority, and they also carry officials, bandits, lawsuits, illness and romantic trouble. 七杀 adds its own set: 可表示有心计、严格、多能、脾气不好 — calculation, strictness, being capable in many ways, and a bad temper.

And the material splits it by position. 天干七杀在特定时候可表示名声,地支七杀则表示心力强,有心劲 — a 七杀 in the heavenly stem can mean reputation; the same god in an earthly branch means drive and inner resolve. One label, two readings, decided by where it sits.

So, in one sentence: 七杀 is the same-polarity controller of your Day Master, it reads as authority, pressure, litigation, illness or drive depending on where it sits and what reaches it, and it is a structure rather than a verdict.

Why “I walked a 七杀 pillar” is three claims wearing one coat

A luck pillar is two characters — a stem and a branch. The sentence I am in a 七杀 pillar usually means someone read the ten-god label on one of those two characters and filed all ten years under it.

The material above already breaks the first half of that. 天干七杀 and 地支七杀 do not read the same: one can indicate reputation, the other indicates drive. If your 七杀 sits in the branch and you have been reading a stem-side description, you have been reading about a different object.

The second claim is about the ten years themselves. Lines differ on how a decade divides between its stem and its branch — some weight the stem through the first half and the branch through the second, others read the pair together — but none of them treat a decade as one flat event. The explanation you were given may have flattened it before you did.

The third claim is the one nobody states out loud: that the 七杀 in your chart is a problem. That is a separate question with a separate answer, and it is the next section.

When 七杀 is the thing the chart wants

七杀 is not automatically the enemy. The notes record a chart where 时上七杀为用神,主有闯劲,开拓能力强 — the 七杀 in the hour stem is the useful god, and it reads as drive and the ability to open new ground.

On the question of control, the line is: 七杀为小人为恶人为官害,今用一点食神制之,即表示恶人能为我所用 — 七杀 is the petty man, the villain, the official who harms you; control it with even a little 食神 and it means the villain can be made to work for you. This is the 食神制杀 structure. The pressure does not vanish. It acquires a handler.

The same logic runs through 印化杀, where the resource star absorbs the pressure and converts it into standing. Both structures say the same thing: what decides the reading is not whether 七杀 is present, but whether something in the chart reaches it.

Which is why I have 七杀 and my 七杀 is harming me are two different claims. Only the second one is about your life.

How to check your own chart

Two minutes, counting only. Do it in this order.

One: find which character carries the 七杀 — stem or branch. Write it down as a position, not as a label. The two do not read the same.

Two: look for what reaches it. A 食神 that controls it, or an 印 that absorbs it. If something does, you are reading 制化 — pressure with a handler — rather than raw attack.

Three: decide whether that 七杀 is what the chart wants or what the chart fears. This is the step most people skip, because it asks for a judgement about the whole chart rather than about one character. If you cannot make it, that is the honest answer, and it beats guessing from the label.

Four: split the decade. Write out the years of this pillar you have already lived and mark the bad ones. If they are spread evenly across the ten, the pillar is a fair suspect. If they cluster in one or two, you are looking at 流年 — the year — and the pillar is not what hurt you. This is the only step that can separate the two, and it costs ten minutes.

What this does not tell you

None of the above is a reading, and none of it predicts anything. It is a way to stop a label from doing the work of an argument.

There is a reason the blind-school material is impatient here. 段建业 writes in the same collection: 看身弱身强只是初学者的一个拐杖,我主张要逐步废弃看身强弱 — judging weak-or-strong is a beginner’s crutch, and he argues for discarding it. The point is not that 七杀 is harmless. It is that a method which stops at you have 七杀, therefore has stopped one step too early.

We have not run the 天干 versus 地支 split across the 1,285 published charts we use for the other articles. That gap is real, not modesty. Treat this page the way you would treat any structural rule: take it to your own past before you take it to anyone’s future.

The retro-check is cheap, and it is the whole point of the page. If you were told your decade is bad because of 七杀, write the ten years out and look at the shape of it. Evenly spread damage means the label earned its place. Two bad years and eight ordinary ones means the explanation you were handed was standing in for something else — and you found that out without anyone reading your chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is 七杀 (Seven Killings) in Bazi?

七杀 (Seven Killings) is the Ten God that controls your Day Master at the same yin-yang polarity — for 甲 wood it is 庚 metal, while 辛 metal would be 正官. It carries office, rank and authority as well as lawsuits, illness and romantic trouble, and the material adds calculation, strictness and drive. Whether it harms you depends on where it sits and whether a 食神 or 印 reaches it, not on the label alone.

Is 七杀 always bad in a Bazi chart?

No. The blind-school material records 时上七杀为用神,主有闯劲,开拓能力强 — a 七杀 in the hour stem serving as the useful god, read as drive and the ability to open new ground. The same collection also contains a chart whose outcome had 与七杀旺不旺关系不大, little to do with how strong the 七杀 was. The label is not the verdict.

What is the difference between 七杀 and 正官?

Both are the element that controls your Day Master. 正官 is the controlling element of the opposite polarity — 辛 metal for 甲 wood — and reads as office and orderly authority. 七杀 is the same-polarity controller — 庚 for 甲 — and reads as pressure, threat and drive. Same mechanism, opposite charge.

Does 天干七杀 mean something different from 地支七杀?

Yes, and the material says so directly: 天干七杀在特定时候可表示名声,地支七杀则表示心力强,有心劲. A 七杀 in the heavenly stem can indicate reputation; the same god in an earthly branch indicates drive and inner resolve. This is why I am in a 七杀 pillar is not yet a claim — you have to say which character carries it.

How do I know whether my 七杀 is controlled?

Look for a 食神 that controls it or an 印 that absorbs it, and check that the two can actually reach each other in the chart. The recorded formulation is 食神制杀: 七杀为小人为恶人为官害,今用一点食神制之,即表示恶人能为我所用 — once a 食神 controls it, the villain can be made to work for you. If nothing reaches it, split the decade year by year before blaming the pillar at all.
