Southern Hemisphere Bazi: Should the Chart Be Flipped?
The Short Answer
The four pillars are not flipped. The chart is a coordinate of time, not a record of weather. Solar terms are defined by the Sun’s apparent longitude, so a birth in Sydney and a birth in Beijing at the same instant fall in the same solar term and produce the same Year and Month pillars.
Why Flipping the Pillars Breaks Everything
The sexagenary cycle is a continuous calendar. Flipping it by hemisphere would split the world into two incompatible calendars, break the derivation of Luck Pillars (which depends on the distance from birth to the adjacent solar term), and make every classical case study impossible to cross-check. A chart that disagrees with every other calculator cannot be verified against your own past.
But One Layer Genuinely Does Change
Classical climate adjustment (调候, tiaohou) is different. The Qiong Tong Bao Jian reasons from physical weather: winter Metal wants Fire because it is cold; summer Wood wants Water because it is dry. That text was written in the northern temperate zone and never treated a southern case. For a December birth in Sydney the premise "the Rat month is deep winter" is simply false.
How Jianji Handles It
The pillars stay untouched. For births below the Tropic of Capricorn, the month branch is mapped to its opposite before the climate table is consulted, so a Sydney Rat month is read with the climate of a northern Horse month. Near the equator there is no seasonal inversion at all, only weak seasonality, so climate-based evidence is down-weighted rather than flipped.
Why This Matters for Verification
Most calculators silently apply northern climate doctrine worldwide. If you were born in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, or Singapore and a reading told you your chart is "cold and needs warmth" for a mid-summer birth, that is the artifact you were seeing.
